KMSG TOP 5 Awareness Programs

Below issues are identified by our volunteers as top sources of Plastic and Trash on our streets and causing leakages through our storm drains before the streets get sweeped and picked up by volunteers. During our audit in a typical street cleanup we found the items like…
If all residents follow these top 5 things we can reduce 90% of Plastic and other Trash leakages through storm drains which are polluting our waters and Oceans and causing deadly plastic pollution to our oceans and environments.

1. Clean any spillovers after Recycle and Garbage Pickup Days

2. Don’t throw any Plastic Bottles/Cans/Wrappers on Streets

3. Don’t throw any Dog Poop bags on Streets/near storm drains

4. Don’t throw any small Liquor Bottles on Streets

5. Don’t throw any Cigarette Butts/Packs/Vaping Products on Streets

1. Clean any spillovers after Recycle and Garbage Pickup Days

All residents, please pay attention to any spill over after each recycle or garbage pickup day and clean along with your bins pickup. Another instruction is during windy days it is much more significant to these leakages and see if any items are blown out of the bin and left unpicked by crew. If you use Lids for the recyclable bins, this can be reduced significantly. This will significantly reduce the amount of plastic or trash leakages and infiltrating through storm drains.

2. Don’t throw any Plastic Bottles/Cans/Wrappers on Streets

Most significant items found are Plastic bottles/Cans/Wrappers thrown unknowingly on streets and these bottles and cans will be flattened if any car runs over these items. Once it is flat and it is easy to infiltrate through the storm drains, even it has grates. Please do not throw any of these items.

3. Don’t throw any Dog Poop bags on Streets/near storm drains

The Dog Poop bags more significant items found on our streets and picked up during river and meadow cleanups. These bags will not creak, since it is wrapped in plastic bag. It is not safe to throw Dog Poop bags in the storm drain. Sometimes it is found on the curb side and it is easily washed onto the street on a big rainy day and eventually leads to storm drains. For all dog lovers our sincere request not to throw onto streets or near storm drains.

4.Don’t throw any small Liquor Bottles on Streets

We found a lot of small liquor bottles on streets of plastic material and these are very easily flown into storm drains even though they have grates. Once it seeps into storm drains and it reaches to Oceans very quickly. It is very hard to recover from our rivers or oceans because of these small sizes.

5. Don’t throw any Cigarette Butts/Packs/Vaping Products on Streets

The next most significant items found on our streets are Tobacco Products, Cigarette packets, Cigarette Butts, vaping products. These are very small sizes and these items are easily washed away into the storm drains even with grates to storm drains. Cigarette Butts are the top most items picked by volunteers during beach cleanups across the world as per the Oceanographic audit reports. Keep Our Streets Free From Cigarette Butts!! (Yes, it contains plastic, made of cellulose acetate, which takes a decade to decompose) and harmful to marine life.
