A local effort to save our Oceans from Plastic Pollution

About us

“KeepMyStreetGreen” is a local effort to save our Oceans from Plastic Pollution by doing it through an “Adopt A Street” Program by volunteers. This project was started as an Innovative Community Project in Parsippany, NJ by its Green Team, as part of the sustainable Jersey goals commitment (https://www.sustainablejersey.com/) and is planning to expand to more towns in NJ.
Our mission is to collaborate with our residents, town government and business community to identify and implement programs that improve our quality of life and the physical, environmental and financial sustainability of our community.

Do you know how serious is ocean pollution?

You may think that our oceans are just fine and aren’t being affected as severely from pollution. You are wrongly mistaken. Here are some facts to back up our claim.
>>   There are approximately 5.25 trillions bits and chunks of plastic garbage located all around our oceans.

>>  Also, about 8 million tons of plastic debris are continuously disposed of in

>>  our oceans every year. 269,000 tons was the estimate of floating plastic trash bobbing in the surface of our oceans from a study in 2014.

How bad plastics are polluting our oceans?

An estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic hover dangerously in the ocean waters, equal to 80,000 tons and it keeps growing every year.

Plastic waste kills up to one million seabirds, 100,000 sea mammals, marine turtles and countless fish each year.

How plastic is reaching our oceans?

ONE OF THE MAJOR SOURCES OF THIS ARE LAND BASED SOURCES LIKE…STORM DRAINS

>>  Plastic litter all around the street doesn’t remain there. Rainwater and the blustering wind carries plastic litter to storm drains and streams, and then through rivers, which go ultimately end up into the oceans

>>  When you throw your plastic garbage into the bin, instead of environmentally recycling it, it gets transferred to landfills. It is usually blown away into drains, and come into rivers and seas this way

>>  This explains how vital it is to keep our streets clean and green, as well as to protect our storm drains from any run-off plastic material

How our streets are responsible?

This is a very common sight in our streets. During the last 100 years, we have engineered our streets to keep them free from flooding.

However, we have created thousands of miles of storm drain highways, which carry millions of gallons of water into streams and oceans, the same engineering marvels, because of our negligence, are carrying millions of plastic debris into our oceans.

How you can help protect the oceans?

Protect storm drains from plastic pollution:
To keep our storm drains free from plastic debris and other hazardous materials, which are infiltrating through our storm drains and to water streams to oceans, volunteers will be picking plastic debris monthly under Adopted street’ a program. Keeping clean streets is not a street beautification program, it is a program to save our next generations too.

We can address this problem locally at a community level, How?

ONE SIMPLE SOLUTION WE CAN DO IS : “KEEP MY STREET GREEN”
